The San Francisco Mindfulness Foundation
is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mindfulness-based educational and therapeutic programs to the San Francisco/Bay Area community and health care practitioners. These programs will include lectures on mindfulness-based therapies, workshops for practitioners, and therapeutic programs for the community such as Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
What is Mindfulness?
"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way:
on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally."
                                                                -- Jon Kabat-Zinn
Mindfulness refers to being completely in touch with and aware of the present moment, as well as taking a non-evaluative and non-judgmental approach to your inner experience. For example, a mindful approach to one's inner experience is simply viewing "thoughts as thoughts" as opposed to evaluating certain thoughts as positive or negative. The practice of mindfulness cultivates the ability to put space between a triggering thought or feeling and a reaction to that thought or feeling. Rather than react in an automatic way, mindfulness allows one to act more skillfully, with intention.  Mindfulness meditation, or vipassana, is an example of a practice which cultivates mindfulness.
Mindfulness has been shown to be a helpful and effective way to bring relief to some common sources of suffering in the world, such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, addictive behaviors, and interpersonal conflict. Mindfulness helps us develop an attitude of acceptance and kindness to ourselves and to others.
